I'm honored and awed that so many of you are asking about the fate of the show after March 31st. The best way to be informed is to send me an email here. I'll keep everything arriving at that address in a folder and will update you when I've got something concrete to tell you. I'll also try to update this page.
MARCH 23rd-- For those of you who reached out to Sirius, they heard you and promptly got in touch. Their response was encouraging but I suspect bandwidth availability may be an issue. I'll keep you posted. Thanks, also, to those of you who must have emailed Clear Channel, even though I asked you not to do that. After our biggest supporter left the company a couple years ago, every contact we've had from his replacements confirmed their ardent desire to see us leave. Now with our contract expiring on March 31st, imagine my surprise at hearing from them, asking if we'd like to stay. I've had no interest in that but since so many of you felt differently, we entertained their offer-- until I got to the part about my being bound to never utter anything derogatory about Clear Channel, and what amounts to over 5,000 associated entities, in any public setting anywhere, during the agreement and after its conclusion, forevermore. Never mind that such a clause would be unenforceable, not to mention, unconscionable, and that they get my show for free-- their assertion that other folks have no trouble with that promise made me want to ask for some names. Anyone who would sign that deal should not be allowed out on the street unchaperoned. There was more amusement, but in the final analysis, none of it mattered, as our advertisers would be shortchanged by the total loss of replays in the new agreement. (Currently we're on the air 7 overnights a week, in addition to our live evening show.) Coupled with my constant pledge to you-- to never endorse something I don't fully believe is a great value for you; is a pledge to my advertisers-- to never sell commercial time that isn't a great value for them. What we were offered wouldn't have been of value to any of us. But that's not to demean Clear Channel for trying. I thank them for their interest, and again, I thank you, if you stoked it. Emotionally, I feel the relief of having narrowly escaped. And as I've been doing this show for 11 continuous years now, I plan to take a while to relish doing nothing. But it won't be long before I have something I want to say, and I hope you'll be listening when I say it. Thanks again for all your support. |
